{"id":63,"date":"2007-09-17T19:42:45","date_gmt":"2007-09-17T18:42:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.marcurselli.com\/2007\/09\/17\/wylands-eco-conscious-cd-rhythms-of-the-sea-out-now\/"},"modified":"2009-11-18T14:07:17","modified_gmt":"2009-11-18T19:07:17","slug":"wylands-eco-conscious-cd-rhythms-of-the-sea-out-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marcurselli.com\/blog\/wylands-eco-conscious-cd-rhythms-of-the-sea-out-now\/","title":{"rendered":"Wyland&#8217;s eco-conscious CD &#8220;Rhythms of the Sea&#8221; out now!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wylandstudiostore.com\/products\/fullsize\/WYCD-RSE07.jpg\" title=\"Wyland\" alt=\"Wyland\" align=\"left\" border=\"1\" height=\"266\" hspace=\"10\" width=\"300\" \/>A few months ago I recorded a beautiful jazz album featuring some of NY&#8217;s top jazz musicians (saxophonist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vincentherring.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vincent Herring<\/a>, Saturday Night Live trombonist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steveturre.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Turre<\/a>, pianist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vervemusicgroup.com\/artist.aspx?ob=per&amp;src=prd&amp;aid=3096\" target=\"_blank\">Anthony Wonsey<\/a>, vocalist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paulettemcwilliams.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Paulette McWilliams<\/a> and more) and incredibly charming and gorgeously performed music with lyrics written by <a href=\"http:\/\/wyland.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wyland<\/a>, an amazing environmentally-driven American painter and visual artist whose <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wylandfoundation.org\/index.cfm?mid=2&amp;sid=10\" target=\"_blank\">humongous and larger than life<\/a> art you probably saw at least once in your life somewhere in the US.<\/p>\n<p>As a Hawaii resident and lover of the sea, <strong>Wyland<\/strong> has always been extremely dedicated to the conservation of the aquatic fauna (the subject of his art), so he decided to explore and reach out to different types of arts to promote global awareness. As an environmentally-conscious person myself (not to mention avid kitesurfer and lover of the sea), I felt absolutely honored and privileged to work on this magnificent album and I can&#8217;t wait to hear it and see it (I hear the artwork is amazing, which is pretty obvious and expected at this point, isn&#8217;t it?).<\/p>\n<p>The album just was announced a few days ago and is available on the Home Shopping Network and in selected stores. Rhythms of the Sea, was<br \/>\nrecorded in New York City with saxophonist Vincent Herring, Saturday Night Live trombonist Steve Turre, pianist Anthony Wonsey, vocalist Paulette McWilliams performing as the Earth Jazz Agents. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><br \/>\n\u201cWith this debut music project, Wyland\u2019s goal is clear as the  turquoise water of a South Pacific island,\u201d says said Laurence<br \/>\nDonohue-Greene, managing editor of AllAboutJazz-New York.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe can only hope that future collaborations between marine life  and earthbound musicians continue along these paths.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cRhythms of the Sea\u201d was arranged and produced by Herring, who called upon other collaborators,  including as trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, pianist\/keyboardist Nat Adderley, Jr., cellist Akua Dixon, and two-time Grammy Award winning engineer Marc Urselli. Noted for his fine Cannonball Adderley-inspired alto work, Herring also performs on soprano sax and flute From \u201cFlow\u201d, \u201cSacred Seas\u201d, and \u201cOcean Paradise\u201d to \u201cTurtle Time\u201d, \u201cRhythms of the Sea\u201d, \u201cOcean of Light\u201d and \u201cEndangered Species\u201d, vocalist Paulette McWilliams connects Wyland\u2019s environmentally-conscious thoughts and words into song. Wyland himself composed lyrics for six of the seven songs that McWilliams sings and even makes a brief cameo on \u201cEndangered Species\u201d by adding spoken word over the backing vocals of Andromeda Turre\u2019s repeated refrain of \u201cProtect our Planet.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Turre bridges the worlds further with his musical mastery of the conch shell. His composition \u201cFlying Fish\u201d  is a celebratory number, from Herring\u2019s high-spirited alto lines leading to trumpeter Jeremy Pelt\u2019s Hugh Masakela-influenced smears, blasts and bent notes, trombonist Turre and Wonsey\u2019s soulful upbeat piano.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhale Song\u201d pairs composer Turre\u2019s overdubbed conches and Dixon\u2019s arco-played cello with the as-credited \u201cbacking vocals\u201d of a recording by the humpback whales of the Silver Bank.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cRhythms of the Sea\u201d is available at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wyland.com\" target=\"_blank\">www.wyland.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>About the Artist<br \/>\nOne of the world&#8217;s most recognizable artists, Wyland has developed an international reputation for his commitment to marine life conservation, most notably his monumental marine life murals, the Whaling Walls.
